Foreign student
UFMG receives foreign students within mobility programs and cooperative exchange programs established with other universities. The students may attend up to two academic semesters at UFMG. The degree is awarded by the university of origin, with the issue of a certificate for courses provided by UFMG.
Undergraduate and graduate students who are regularly enrolled in a foreign institution of higher learning, with which UFMG has academic cooperation, may participate in exchange programs.
To the foreign student interested in the exchange program, UFMG offers the following modes:
- enrollment in regular courses;
- participation in a research project, advised by a professor of UFMG.
The foreign students may apply for the UFMG exchange program if:
- they are regularly enrolled in a foreign institution of higher education that has are agreement of cooperation with UFMG;
- they have the necessary proficiency in Portuguese that allow them to take classes at UFMG.
After fulfilling the requirements mentioned above, the partner institution must send to the Office for International Relations at UFMG (DRI) the following documents:
- transcripts translated into Portuguese;
- two letters of recommendation from professors;
- letter of intent;
- enrollment form
- copy of the passport;
- 2 photos.
Dates for receiving documentation at DRI:
01 October – to initiate exchange for the first semester (February to July);
01 April – to initiate exchange for the second semester (August to December).
DRI cannot guarantee enrollment if documentation is not received by these dates.

Letter of acceptance issued by UFMG
DRI will send a LETTER OF ACCEPTANCE to those students who fulfill all the requirements mentioned above, including the stipulated dates. The letter of acceptance will be sent directly to the Office for International Relations of the student’s university of origin. With the letter of acceptance, the student must obtain the student Visa -VITEM IV, from the Brazilian consular service closest to his country of origin. UFMG will not accept exchange students who do not have the student visa.
