Political Science
Founded in 1966, UFMG’s Political Science M.A. Program is the oldest in the country. The course requires 24 credits and thesis defense. Credit work usually takes 3 semesters. At the end of the third semester, students must submit a thesis proposal to their advisors. The program aims to prepare professionals to teach and research, as well as to provide consultancy to the public and private sectors.

Education
To train teachers, researchers, and education professionals to design and implement innovative research projects that are both theoretically consistent and socially relevant. To constitute and create an opportunity for collective reflection on pedagogical practice and theory. To create favorable conditions for the development of research and analysis of the educational phenomenon in its multiple social and cultural relations.

Philosophy
Created in 1974, it takes from one to three years for completion, and offers grants from Capes, CNPq, and Fapemig. Research areas are Esthetics and Art Philosophy, Philosophy and Psychoanalytical Theory, Social and Political Philosophy, Logic and Philosophy of Science, Marxism, History of Philosophy. Admission requirements are: an interview about the Research Project, written examination, and translation of a philosophical text in a foreign language. Application and selection take place every November.

Geography
The Graduate Program in Geography aims to prepare teachers for higher education and research in the area of Geography.

History
Created in 1990, UFMG’s History M.A. Program focuses on the History of Social Relations of Domination. There are three research areas: Work Relations, Political Relations, and Culture and Society. Application for one of the 15 openings takes place in December and the interviews in January. Additional criteria for evaluating prospective students include translation of a scientific text from English or French, analysis of candidate’s C.V., and a written examination.

Psychology
Created in 1989, the Psychology M.A. Program aims to study social behavior of individuals and the factors that influence it and to analyze concrete situations under psychoanalytical theory.

Sociology
The Sociology M.A. Program aims to prepare teachers and researchers capable of using sociological theory and methods of analysis adequate to the study of issues caused by national and regional development.

Sociology and Politics
The program’s main objective is to offer theoretical and methodological training for students to adequately involve themselves in the problems and present debates that face the disciplines. Therefore, students must have the necessary tools to analyze substantive problems with which they will focus on in their formation.

Philosophical Topics
The Post-Baccalaureate Program offers the opportunity to deepen the students’ knowledge of philosophy, both in its fundamental disciplines and in specific topics. Its objectives are the philosophical formation of professionals from all areas, the preparation of Philosophy teachers for secondary and higher education, and the diffusion of philosophical contents and procedures to a public not served by the Department’s academic concentrations. The Program offers “aperfeiçoamento” and refresher courses.

Psychoanalytical Theory
Offering the possibility of deepening the students’ knowledge of fundamental concepts and specific topics in psychoanalytical theory, the course aims to provide basic theoretical formation to professionals from different areas; to educate Psychology teachers in psychoanalytical theory; to open new possibilities for psychoanalytical theory teaching and research in regular Psychology curricula.
