Foi professor da Universidade Sorbonne-Nouvelle, Paris III, e da Universidade Aut\u00f4noma do M\u00e9xico. Membro do Saint Antony&#8217;s College, da Universidade de Oxford e do Wilson International Center for Scholars em Washington, DC. Foi membro do Comit\u00ea Executivo da Associa\u00e7\u00e3o Internacional de Sociologia (1994-2002) e Coordenador Mundial do F\u00f3rum Internacional de Ci\u00eancias Sociais e Sa\u00fade (1998-2003). Foi membro do Comit\u00ea Consultivo de Pesquisa em Sa\u00fade (CAIS) da OPAS em Washington e de v\u00e1rios comit\u00eas de Pesquisa B\u00e1sica e Aplicada da OMS em Genebra.
