He holds a PhD from the European University Institute (1992, Florence), has been visiting professor at Stanford University (1993) and Georgetown (2004), and visiting researcher at Princeton University (1996), the University of California-Berkeley (2000 and 2010) and at New York University (2017). He is co-editor of the series \u201cThe Portuguese-speaking world. History, Politics and Culture\u201d, for the Sussex Academic Press. He has works on political elites, authoritarian regimes and democratization.
