He has devoted much of his academic and professional career to improving methods for designing conservation and development in remarkable landscapes that are under pressure for change. He began his affiliation with the Laboratory for Computing and Spatial Analysis at Harvard in 1965. In 1984, the Council of Educators on Landscape Architecture (CELA) honored Prof. Steinitz with the Outstanding Educator Award for his &#8220;outstanding contribution to environmental design education.&#8221; In 1996, he received the annual \u201cOutstanding Practice Award\u201d from the International Society of Landscape Ecology. He has been honored as a top professor at Harvard University and received the Jot Carpenter Teaching Medal from the American Society of Landscape Architects in 2015.
