He is internationally recognized as an expert in applying the Digital Storytelling methodology to digital and written media, which he and his colleagues developed in the 1990s. His methodology has become part of the curriculum at schools and universities in all 50 US states and beyond. 22 countries (methodology translated into 9 languages). Since 1994, he has led 300 workshops and directly assisted over 5000 people in completing 1-minute videos.
