Trata-se de uma \u00e1rvore de grande porte, que pelo formato dilatado de seu tronco na base formando uma barriga, assemelha-se ao baob\u00e1. O caule, assim como nos cactos, armazena \u00e1gua, uma adapta\u00e7\u00e3o para a planta viver em ambientes com forte estresse h\u00eddrico, como a Caatinga. As folhas possuem um longo pec\u00edolo, s\u00e3o simples, grandes, palmin\u00e9rveas, ovaladas, com disposi\u00e7\u00e3o alterna, adensadas no \u00e1pice dos ramos e caem no inverno. As flores est\u00e3o reunidas em infloresc\u00eancias terminais e s\u00e3o branco-rosadas, possuindo numerosos e pronunciados estames. A poliniza\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e9 realizada por morcegos, que visitam as flores em busca de n\u00e9ctar.
