Gaertn.<br><strong>Fam\u00edlia<\/strong>: Malvaceae<br><strong>Outro nome popular<\/strong>: \u00e1rvore-da-seda<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A suma\u00fama \u00e9 uma das maiores \u00e1rvores das florestas tropicais da Am\u00e9rica e da \u00c1frica. Na Floresta Amaz\u00f4nica destaca-se pelo seu grande porte, com at\u00e9 50 metros de altura, e pelas ra\u00edzes tabulares presentes na base alargada do seu tronco, que pode ter mais de 2 metros de di\u00e2metro, ajudando na sustenta\u00e7\u00e3o da sua enorme copa. As folhas s\u00e3o alternas, compostas digitadas, com at\u00e9 8 fol\u00edolos alongados unidos ao final do pec\u00edolo. As flores s\u00e3o creme e est\u00e3o reunidas em infloresc\u00eancias no \u00e1pice dos ramos. O fruto \u00e9 uma grande c\u00e1psula lenhosa, que se abre e libera as sementes envoltas por uma paina, dispersas pelo vento a longas dist\u00e2ncias. Cientistas tentam entender sua distribui\u00e7\u00e3o atual e especulam como a esp\u00e9cie cruzou o Oceano Atl\u00e2ntico e colonizou a \u00c1frica, que pode ter sido por meio da combina\u00e7\u00e3o de grandes vendavais e de correntes mar\u00edtimas, ou mesmo aderidas a grandes troncos flutuantes.
