K. Schum.<br><strong>Fam\u00edlia<\/strong>: Rubiaceae<br><strong>Outros nomes populares<\/strong>: mulateiro, pau-marfim<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>O pau-mulato \u00e9 uma \u00e1rvore nativa da regi\u00e3o amaz\u00f4nica, onde ocorre geralmente em \u00e1reas de v\u00e1rzeas que s\u00e3o periodicamente inundadas. Pode alcan\u00e7ar at\u00e9 30 metros de altura e seu tronco \u00e9 facilmente reconhecido por ser esguio, com ramifica\u00e7\u00f5es apenas no \u00e1pice e ter a superf\u00edcie lisa e brilhante, como se fosse envernizada. Anualmente a camada superficial do caule \u00e9 renovada, inicialmente a nova casca \u00e9 esverdeada, passando a marrom ou avermelhada ao longo do tempo. Suas folhas s\u00e3o opostas, simples, de contorno el\u00edptico e colora\u00e7\u00e3o verde-escura. As flores s\u00e3o brancas, pequenas, muito perfumadas, reunidas em cachos amplos e vistosos no \u00e1pice dos ramos. As flores s\u00e3o visitadas por insetos. Os frutos s\u00e3o c\u00e1psulas, que se abrem quando maduras, dispersando as min\u00fasculas sementes aladas ao vento. O pau-mulato tem grande apelo ornamental, especialmente pelas diferentes colora\u00e7\u00f5es reveladas por seu tronco ao longo do ano.
