The Pampulha Campus
The Pampulha campus was created in the 40s. The first buildings in
the University City were the Institute of Mechanics (now the Vocational
School) and the Rectory.
As years went by, new courses were created: Veterinary Medicine (1961),
Library Science (1963), Fine Arts (1963), and Physical Education (1969).
For many years, the Pampulha campus was semi-dormant. The effective
occupation of the campus by the university community started only in
the 1960s, when the construction of the main buildings. Today, there
are 12 academic units, the Center for Applied Education (middle school),
the Vocational School (high school), and the units and sections that
run the University.
The Saúde Campus
On the Saúde campus are the Schools of Medicine and Nursing
and the Hospital das Clínicas, a center of excellence. Consisting
of a main building and seven out-patient departments, it houses the activities
of 1,400 Medicine students, 200 Nursing students, and academic personnel
from the courses of Pharmacy, Psychology, and Occupational Therapy.
Off-Campus Units
In addition to the units on the Pampulha and Saúde campi, there
are other UFMG units located in the central part of Belo Horizonte and
in surrounding neighborhoods. According to the University's building
plan, these units must gradually move to the Pampulha campus, as has
recently happened with the Schools of Music and Dentistry.
The Schools of Economics and Law, and part of the School of Engineering
(the administration office and some departments) are in the central
area of Belo Horizonte. The School of Architecture is in the Funcionários
neighborhood and the School of Pharmacy is in the Lourdes neighborhood.
Other off-campus units are the Cultural Center, the UFMG Music Conservatory,
and the Mendes Pimentel Foundation, situated in the central region,
and the Museum of Natural History and the Botanical Garden, located
in the Horto neighborhood.
