The collapse of two dams belonging to the mining company Samarco, in Mariana (MG), which occurred on November 5, 2015, turned the world’s attention to Brazil. Since then, several members of universities and the public and private sector have sought to debate the effects, problems and actions surrounding the disaster at the Fundão Dam, the greatest environmental tragedy in the country’s history.
In addition to understanding the magnitude of this disaster, which claimed human lives and caused enormous damage to the environment, the importance of thinking about mining activity in the country stands out at this time.
