Cultural Schedule

Activity: Movie Club

Looking to provide more insight into Brazilian culture and current affairs, the SSBS schedule includes a Movie Club, which involves the screening of a relevant film from Brazilian cinema and a debate on the repercussions of its topic and approach. Past editions have included films such as Mars One (Dir. Gabriel Martins, 2022), The Second Mother (Dir. Anna Muylaert, 2015) and I’m Still Here (Dir. Walter Salles, 2024), winner of the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.

Activity: Day trip – Historical city of Minas Gerais (Ouro Preto)

Home to events that shaped Brazil’s past and present, Ouro Preto is a UNESCO World Heritage Site situated about two hours away from UFMG’s main campus. The SSBS trip to the historical town offers students an opportunity to come in close contact with the content of the course’s lectures, as well as being an enriching and immersive touristic experience.

Activity: Inhotim Institute

The Inhotim Institute is one of the world’s largest open-air museums, exhibiting pieces of global excellence in contemporary art surrounded by lush rainforest vegetation. With temporary and permanent exhibits by artists from all over the world, and located in Brumadinho, Greater Belo Horizonte, the interactive and interdisciplinary design of the museum provides an unforgettable and unparalleled experience in the fruition of visual art.

Activity: Luau

As a means of closing and celebrating each year’s program, the SSBS ends with a Luau that gathers all students to spend one last afternoon together and share a more laid-back experience with one another. This includes the typical talent show and also a gift exchange dynamic that brings all students together and strengthens the bond created throughout the two weeks of the program.
