The University-Based Institutes for Advanced Study (UBIAS) network, which brings together institutes for advanced studies linked to universities on five continents, is now accepting applications for the 5th edition of the Intercontinental Academy (ICA), which will be held in two immersion meetings. The first, in June and July 2026, at the University of Erfurt, Germany, and the second, in March 2027, at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

The Intercontinental Academia aims to foster the creation of a global network of future research leaders through the exchange of young academics mentored by some of the world’s most eminent researchers. The 5th edition of the Intercontinental Academia will have the theme “Pluralities of Resonant Relationships.”

Applications must be submitted by September 30, 2025.

Outstanding young researchers, up to 15 years after obtaining their doctorate, from different areas of knowledge, are eligible to apply.

Pluralities of Resonant Relations
The theme of ICA5 addresses the concept of “Pluralities of Resonant Relations,” based on the sociological theory of world relations developed by Hartmut Rosa, one of today’s most influential social theorists. The initiative aims to analyze and understand, from the perspective of different disciplines, how individuals create meaningful and resonant relationships with other individuals, societies, objects, and comprehensive concepts—both theoretically and through practical, real-world case studies.

UFMG Internal Application Deadline
Interested candidates with an institutional affiliation with UFMG (faculty or postdoctoral fellows) must submit their proposal to the UFMG Institute of Advanced Transdisciplinary Studies (IEAT) by September 17, 2025, sending the required documentation to info@ieat.ufmg.br. After evaluation, selected projects will receive a letter of institutional endorsement.

Official Submission to ICA/UBIAS
The letter of endorsement, along with the rest of the documentation required for the call, must be submitted by the applicant by September 30, 2025, to the following address: mwk.bewerbungen@uni-erfurt.de

The Institute for Advanced Transdisciplinary Studies (IEAT) at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) and the Max-Weber-Kolleg at the University of Erfurt will host the 5th edition of the Intercontinental Academia. ICA is one of the most successful initiatives developed by members of the UBIAS network and promotes “scientific exchange” between generations, disciplines, cultures and continents around a topic or theme.
