The IEAT will promote, on October 24th, the round table “Meeting of Knowledge: promoting epistemic diversity“, at 10 am, in the Auditorium A102 at CAD2/UFMG. The event, part of UFMG’s Knowledge Week, will feature the participation of important leaders and researchers:

  • Patrícia Kauark Leite – Director of IEAT/UFMG
  • Joelson Ferreira dos Santos – Leader of Teia dos Povos and Terra Vista Settlement in Arataca, Bahia
  • Makota Kidoialê – Quilombo Manzo Ngunzo Kaiango
  • José Jorge de Carvalho – Professor at the University of Brasília
  • Djalma Aranã – Master’s student at PPG/Letters: Linguistic Studies at UFMG

The Encontro de Saberes movement, started at UnB in 2010 and incorporated by UFMG in 2014, marked a radical break with the profile of higher education teachers since universities were founded more than a thousand years ago. Until now, professors in various areas of knowledge have always taught their knowledge based on written texts, which are read and debated with students. The Encontro de Saberes refounds this model by also placing as professors the masters of traditional knowledge (indigenous, Afro-Brazilian, quilombolas, among others), who learned through full orality in their communities and who now teach their knowledge in universities also through same oral transmission system.

A decade after this first rupture, the UFMG IEAT expands this epistemic refoundation not only in teaching, but also in research. By opening an unprecedented and revolutionary Chair of Traditional Knowledge, he grants masters the status of scientific researchers, placing them on equal terms with the academic scientists who occupy the other chairs of this prestigious institution. The installation of the Chair of Traditional Knowledge at IEAT places UFMG at the global forefront of transdisciplinary theory, which should migrate from the current monoepistemic model of transdiciplinarity to a multi-pistemic model, capable of incorporating the rich polymathy and integrality of the knowledge of the masters of our peoples. traditional.
