A specialist in public security and criminology in Latin America, Professor Gustavo Fondevila, from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain, will be at UFMG for a series of activities within the scope of the FUNDEP/IEAT Chair.

On March 24, he will teach the Prison System Seminar in the Baesse auditorium of the School of Philosophy and Human Sciences (Fafich) at UFMG, at 7 pm. The event will grant certificates of participation to those who register and sign the attendance list on the day of the event.

On March 25, Professor Gustavo Fondevila will give the Grand Conference on Violence in Latin American Prisons and the Formation of Gangs, also in the Baesse Auditorium at Fafich. The event will begin at 2:30 p.m. The conference is open to the general public, with registration required using this form. Certificates of participation will be issued.

In his presentation, Gustavo Fondevila will examine the determinants of violence and its variations in prisons in Latin American countries, using several indicators as a reference, such as the age of inmates, the length of their sentences and the type of crime. According to Fondevila, the results indicate that prisons with greater overcrowding and worse living conditions have lower levels of violence. “We believe that this fact can be explained by the existence of criminal governments, organized and managed by a dominant gang, in the prison systems,” he explains.

On March 28, at 2:00 p.m., also in the Baesse auditorium at Fafich, Professor Gustavo Fondevila will give the seminar on the functioning of criminal justice in Latin America – the role of arrest in flagrante delicto and pretrial detention in sentencing. Certificates will be issued to those who register and sign the attendance list.

All three activities given by Professor Gustavo Fondevila at UFMG are subject to the capacity of the Baesse auditorium at Fafich (68 seats).
