On August 15, 2025, the 2nd Seminar on the Integration of the Chairs of Basic Education and Teacher Training of the Institutes of Advanced Studies at UFMG, UFRJ, and USP was held. The activities took place in the auditorium of the Brazilian College of Advanced Studies at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (CBAE-UFRJ). A recording of the seminar is available on the institution’s YouTube channel.
The event, which marked the continuation of the efforts initiated at the 1st Seminar of the Chairs of Basic Education, held in April 2025 at UFMG, brought together basic education teachers, researchers, and administrators to reflect on the challenges and possibilities of teacher training in dialogue with schools.
In the morning session, Professor Carmen Teresa Gabriel, from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) Teacher Training Complex, highlighted the importance of the exchange between the Basic Education Chairs of the Institutes of Advanced Studies, noting that this movement, inspired by Professor Júlio Emílio Diniz, academic coordinator of the Fundep Magda Soares Chair in Basic Education at the IEAT/UFMG, has the potential to institutionalize new ways of thinking and acting in a network.
Professor Bernardete Gatti, holder of the Alfredo Bosi Chair in Basic Education at the IEA/USP, reflected on the difference between training in schools and training with schools, emphasizing the value of teaching knowledge produced by basic education teachers.
Next, Professor Saint Clair Marques, principal of the Herbert José de Souza Municipal School in Belo Horizonte, and member of the research group “Construction of Hybrid Spaces in Basic Education Teacher Training,” linked to the Fundep Magda Soares Chair in Basic Education at IEAT/UFMG, spoke. Saint Clair highlighted how dialogue with the university has strengthened pedagogical practices aligned with the real needs of the school community. Recounting experiences with Youth and Adult Education (EJA) students in at-risk areas of the Córrego do Onça, he highlighted the importance of recognizing the social and territorial factors that affect students’ lives, such as the constant flooding that impacted attendance and academic performance. Finally, he emphasized the school’s active role in popular mobilization to move families from at-risk areas and in implementing stream renaturalization projects, which paved the way for educational initiatives focused on environmental awareness at different levels.
In the afternoon, Professor Júlio Emílio Diniz presented the possibilities opened by National Education Council Resolution CNE/CP No. 03/2024, which redefines the academic training of undergraduate students, proposing internships throughout the course and increased extension hours in schools. In line with this perspective, Professor Fernanda Lahtermaher, from the UFRJ Application College, highlighted the importance of establishing teacher learning communities as a strategy to strengthen the relationship between universities and schools.
According to Raquel Augusta Melilo Carrieri, a postdoctoral fellow at the Fundep Magda Soares Chair in Basic Education at IEAT/UFMG, the seminar provided a platform for the convergence of ideas and the strengthening of partnerships between universities and schools, reaffirming the centrality of teacher training as a collective and shared process. “The meeting highlighted that the integration of academic knowledge with that produced in basic education is fundamental to developing more consistent training policies and practices that are committed to the realities of Brazilian public schools,” Carrieri emphasized.
