Promotional art for the discipline Artificial Intelligence, Disinformation and current challenges – IEAT/UFMG

At the initiative of the Institutes and Centers for Advanced Studies of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFJR), and the University of Brasília (UnB), the subject Law and Modernity: the invention of human rights, democracy and current challenges will be offered in the second semester of 2025.

The course, which can be taken by undergraduate and graduate students from the three institutions, aims to reflect, through a historical, theoretical and sociological perspective, on the invention of human rights in modern times. Reflections on democracy and popular sovereignty in times of crisis of trust in institutions will also be explored.

At UFMG, the course will be taught by Professor Marcelo Andrade Cattoni de Oliveira, from the UFMG Law School, and will include the participation of Professors Menelick de Carvalho Netto, from UnB, and Juliana Neuenschwander Magalhães from UFRJ. The course will last 60 hours and 4 credits.

For graduate students, the course will be offered in the UFMG Law Graduate Program, using the code DIR872C. The enrollment calendar and instructions are available on the program website. For students in other Graduate Programs, enrollment can be done as an elective course. For courses in which enrollment has already ended, enrollment adjustments can be requested through the Graduate Program Offices.

Undergraduate students will be able to enroll in the course in the third phase of enrollment through the Undergraduate Academic System (Siga), using the code UNI116, Topics in Transdisciplinary Studies: Law and Modernity – the invention of human rights, democracy and current challenges. Classes are scheduled for Tuesdays at 2:00 p.m. at the UFMG Law School, in a room to be announced.

Initiative of the Brazilian Forum of Advanced Institutes (Fobreav)
The inter-institutional course offering is the result of a partnership established through the Brazilian Forum of Advanced Institutes (Fobreav), which brings together Institutes and Centers for Advanced Studies at Brazilian Universities. Fobreav aims to be a space for creative action and critical reflection on the strategic challenges in implementing interdisciplinary studies and research in the country. One of its objectives is to develop initiatives and programs aimed at integrating universities through the construction of knowledge production networks based on inter and transdisciplinarity.
