On Thursday, October 2nd, at 5:30 pm, UFMG will host the seminar National Sovereignty, Democracy, and Education. The event is free, open to the public, and will be held in the auditorium of the Faculty of Law (Avenida João Pinheiro, 100 – Centro, Belo Horizonte).

The seminar will be promoted by the UFMG Citizen Education Program in Defense of Democracy, which was created in 2022 to bring together university projects and initiatives focused on combating disinformation, promoting digital literacy, analyzing electoral processes, and strengthening democracy. In addition to teaching, research, and outreach activities, the program also publishes publications, seminars, and lectures on the topic.

Defending Sovereignty

The event will discuss the relationship between sovereignty, democracy, and education, linking them to the country’s development and the guarantee of basic rights for the population. The debate will also address recent attacks on Brazilian sovereignty in international relations.

The seminar will be held in partnership with Federal Representative Patrus Ananias (Workers’ Party), who will participate in the debate alongside UFMG Rector Sandra Goulart Almeida and Professors Hermes Guerrero (Law School), Geane Alzamora (Department of Social Communication – Fafich), Leonardo Avritzer (Department of Political Science – Fafich), and Anna Luiza Coli (Institute of Transdisciplinary Studies – IEAT/UFMG).

Pillars

President of the Parliamentary Front in Defense of National Sovereignty, Representative Patrus Ananias emphasized on social media that “national sovereignty, democracy, and education are pillars for building a more just and sovereign Brazil.” He added that “democratizing access to education and valuing universities as essential elements for sovereign development are considered non-negotiable.”
