At the intersection of history, cartography, and diplomacy, this book, from a transdisciplinary perspective, investigates the collaboration between Portuguese ambassador Dom Luís da Cunha and French cartographer Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon D’Anville to produce the Carte de l’Amérique méridionale, printed in 1748. This collaboration aimed to create a new geographic image of Brazil, imbuing it with a continental appearance, very similar to its modern territory. This map was not intended to be a mirror of reality, but rather an instrument of convention that, according to the ambassador’s wish, should be used by the Portuguese crown in future negotiations over Brazil’s borders.
