This work summarizes the debates held during the 2nd International Colloquium – Biotechnologies and Regulations, held by the Center for the Study of Contemporary Thought (NEPC) of the School of Philosophy and Human Sciences of UFMG in partnership with IEAT/UFMG.
The colloquium aimed to create a space for interdisciplinary reflection on the development and applications of new biotechnologies, especially those related to genetics and molecular biology. Two groups of questions defined the activities: the question of technical and normative rationality, leading both to the approximation and the demarcation of technology in relation to other fields of human cognition and action, such as science, philosophy, empirical knowledge, morality, and law; The issue of regulating biotechnology, focusing on ethical, political, and legal aspects, was addressed. To this end, anthropological implications were considered, covering the different facets of human reengineering (body and mind), as well as controversies related to the need to control technological processes and systems.
