This work summarizes the discussions held during the 3rd International Colloquium – Biotechnologies and Regulations: Contemporary Challenges, held by the Center for the Study of Contemporary Thought (NEPC) of the School of Philosophy and Human Sciences of UFMG in partnership with IEAT/UFMG.
The colloquium that gave rise to this publication focused on the topic of biotechnologies applied to humans, particularly those related to genetics and molecular biology. To foster technological culture, and especially biotechnology, within the humanities—a process underway in Brazil and worldwide, though still in its infancy—most of the presentations—as in previous colloquia—were led by experts in the humanities and social sciences (anthropologists, philosophers, sociologists, demographers, lawyers, and psychologists). To help us bridge the divide between the “two cultures,” to undermine what still poses as dichotomous and, therefore, hinders their mutual understanding, some experts from the fields of medicine, biology, and veterinary science also participated in the discussions.
