The webinar addressed neo-institutionalist theories of crime, which have been little used to interpret crime and violence in Latin America. Based on the analysis of three countries, the explanatory potential and limitations of these theories in the context of mestizo modernity in Latin America were debated. Although the social mechanisms with which institutionality operates may be generalizable, the singularities and deficiencies in the construction of the modern State in Latin America require an adaptation of this theoretical perspective to the contexts of multiple and informal institutions, the positives of social capital or the negatives of criminal peace. The webinar discussed the importance of these theories for building democracy and sustainable peace.
