Professor Silvia Quinteiro (personal collection)

Guest of the FUNDEP/IEAT Chairs Program, professor Sílvia Quinteiro, Associate Professor at the University of the Algarve, will give the conference Words that shape places: The power of narrative in touristic destination building. June 27, 2024, 2:30 pm, auditorium of the UFMG Geosciences Institute.

Registration: UFMG Event Management System, certificate issued upon signature of the attendance list.

Drawing from the concept of storytelling, Ms. Quinteiro will delve into the power of narrative and how the history and/or stories told about a place influence its interpretation. Using the case of “Sagres Promontory”, Portugal, as an example, she will demonstrate how it is possible to manipulate the tourist’s perception of a destination through narrative, with a particular focus on literary narrative. Thus, she aim to show how shaping the perception of a place through words can be a means of (re)creating and (re)defining it as a touristic destination.
