Harry Collins is Distinguished Research Professor in Sociology and Director of the Center for the Study of Knowledge, Expertise and Science (KES) at Cardiff University, UK. In 1997 he was awarded the “JD Bernal Prize” for his contribution to the social studies of science. His books cover the sociology of scientific knowledge (Changing Order: Replication and Induction in Scientific Practice [1985], Gravity ’s Shadow: The search for gravitational waves [2004]); the relationship between men and machines (Artificial Experts [1990] and The Shape of Actions [1998]); and three volumes of “The Golem” – “The Golem: What You Should Know About Science” (1993), which won the Robert K Merton Prize of the American Sociological Association, followed by volumes on technology (1998) and medicine (2005). ).
