Period: July 31 to August 11, 2005 and August 20 to September 2, 2005

Joseph Willian Stucki is a chemist and professor in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences at the University of Illinois, USA. He is a researcher in physical-chemistry of minerals, in particular in studies of iron redox systems in smectites and their consequences on the environment, as a result of modern agricultural practices and industrial activities, since 1976. On mineral chemical processes involving mineral systems with iron in soils and clay minerals, Professor Stucki organized, in 1985, the NATO Advanced Institute, in Bad Windsheim, Germany, on iron in soils and clay minerals and, in 2004, the Bouyoucos Conference, San Antonio, Texas , USA, on electron transfer and biogeochemistry at the clay-water interface.
