Professor Brammer graduated in Biochemistry from the University of Leeds in 1970. He became a PhD in Neurochemistry with a thesis on inter-membrane lipid transfer, also in Leeds (thesis awarded in 1974). In 1976 he moved to the Institute of Psychiatry as Professor of Biochemistry. His research interests were membrane synthesis, second messenger measurement and function, presynaptic neuropharmacology. Promoted to Full Professor of Biochemistry in 1984. In 1992 he began work on EEG fractal analysis and MRI analysis. He was promoted to “reader” in neuroimaging in 1997 and professor of neuroimaging in 2000. He has co-founded the Brain Image Analysis Unit at the Institute of Psychiatry since 1996.
