IEAT promotes debates on Sustainability and food security in Brazil, The memory of January 8th and The impasses of cultural production and Reflections in Brazil

The Institute for Advanced Transdisciplinary Studies at UFMG will promote the IEAT 2023 Annual Seminar on November 22nd and 23rd. The event will be held in auditorium 4 of the Faculty of Economic Sciences at UFMG. Registration must be made through the UFMG Event Management System. Registrants who sign the attendance list on the day of the event will receive a certificate.

On the 22nd, the opening of the event will be held at 10 am by professor Patrícia Kauark Leite, director of IEAT. Afterwards, professor Ana Paula Brito, Calas-IEAT Professor, will give the conference Memória para que? Why do we need to remember January 8th in Brazil? According to the conference summary sent by the professor, confronting conflicting and traumatic topics is not something encouraged in the Brazilian public space. An example of this are the memories about the period from 1964 to 1985, which were manipulated for decades, until they were officially named by the National Truth Commission as a civil-military dictatorship. According to Ana Paula, several legacies from this period still exist in the country, threatening and weakening democracy. The terrorist attack on January 8, 2023, with the invasion of the buildings of the three Powers, can be read as one of these legacies. At the conference, professor Ana Paula intends to bring to light this recent moment in the country’s history, seeking to reflect on it through two provocations: “But what is the point of preserving this memory? Why do the next generations need to know this?”

On the same day, at 2 pm, IEAT’s resident professors give presentations on the results of their research. Participating in this section are professors Fabio Alves da Silva Junior and Fábio Bonfim Duarte, both from the Faculty of Arts at UFMG, Marcelo Campos Galuppo, from the Faculty of Law at UFMG and Gilberto Medeiros Ribeiro, from the Institute of Exact Sciences at UFMG.

On November 23rd, the programming of the Annual Seminar will be in charge of two members of the IEAT scientific committee, who will give conferences. Professor Evaldo Vilela, Visiting Researcher at INCT Semioquímicas at ESALQ/USP, will address the topic of Sustainability at the table: advances, challenges and opportunities in the context of food security for Brazil. UFMG professor emeritus, Francisco César de Sá Barreto, coordinator of the IEAT research group: The Laws of Sciences and Nature and (Un)Sustainable Development. Paths to a Healthy Future, will mediate the debates.

Next, professor Sônia Salzstein Goldberg, from the USP School of Communications and Arts, will give the conference Impasses and tensions in today’s Brazilian cultural process. Professor Stéphane Huchet, from the UFMG School of Architecture, will be the mediator.
