St. Tropez
Rousiley Maia

Rousiley Maia, resident professor at IEAT and from the Department of Social Communication at UFMG, will talk during the launch of the book “The Deliberative System and Inter-Connected Media in Times of Uncertainty,” recently published by Springer. The event will take place on July 8, 2023.

Gabriella Hauber from the Department of Language and Communication at the Federal Technological University of Paraná (UTFPR), and Tariq Choucair, a researcher at the Digital Media Research Center (DMRC) in Brisbane, Australia, who are also co-authors of the book, also will join the event. The authors will engage in a discussion from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Espaço do Conhecimento da UFMG, located at Praça da Liberdade, 700, Funcionários neighborhood, in Belo Horizonte.

The book discusses the theory of deliberative democracy, which emphasizes the importance of active citizen participation in discussions on matters of common interest to produce political decisions. The work adopts a systemic perspective to explore how arguments, lines of reasoning, and emotional concerns connect the political judgment of elites and citizens within and across a set of interconnected arenas in the political system. The authors analyze practices of justification and expressions of emotion, such as in the case of reducing the age of criminal responsibility, as a collective process that transcends time and space.

During the event, the book “Métodos de Pesquisa em Comunicação Política” (Research Methods in Political Communication) will also be presented. Published by the Federal University of Bahia’s Publishing House (Edufba), the book celebrates the 25 years of the Mídia e Esfera Pública (EME) Research Group (EME) at UFMG, coordinated by Professor Rousiley Maia. The publication brings together 13 research methods and instruments applicable to the study of political communication. The research methods are illustrated through dissertations and theses developed by researchers affiliated with EME over this period.

Both books are already available for purchase online. “The Deliberative System and Inter-Connected Media in Times of Uncertainty” can be acquired for $99 in e-book format and $129.99 for the hardcover version on the Springer publisher’s website. “Métodos de Pesquisa em Comunicação Política” can be purchased for R$42 on the Martins Fontes publisher’s website.
