Søren Wichmann is a professor at the Center for Linguistic Studies at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands, having also worked at the University of Copenhagen, the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology and the Federal University of Kazan, in addition to being a visiting researcher at several institutions in the USA , Mexico, Germany and China. After carrying out descriptive and historical linguistic work on several Mesoamerican languages and language families, Wichmann began to make fundamental contributions to the study of Classic Maya writing. More recently, he has turned to the areas of computational modeling of language dynamics and quantitative methods in historical linguistics and linguistic typology, including the development of the ASJP lexical database and methods for studying linguistic prehistory. He has published 12 books and is the author of 150 articles.
