Start of residency: 02/01/2012 to 01/31/2013

Maria do Céu holds a degree in Artistic Education from the State University of Campinas (1989), a Master’s in Education from the State University of Campinas (1996) and a PhD in Education from the State University of Campinas (2000). She is currently Adjunct Professor IV in the Department of Drawing at the School of Fine Arts. He was Head of the Department of Drawing at the School of Fine Arts between 2008 and 2010. He has experience in the field of Arts, with an emphasis on Engraving and Drawing and issues related to Memory and Teaching, working mainly on the following subjects: Fine Arts, Visual Arts, Memory, Education and Memory. She researches the relationship between the Art of Memory and Rhetoric in Art and contemporary productions. She carried out concurrent Post-Doctoral studies at UNICAMP, together with the OLHO Audio-Visual Studies Laboratory, under the coordination of Prof. doctor Milton José de Almeida and at the Universtá degli Studi di L´Aquila, at the Dipartamento di Culture Comparate, under the supervision of Prof. doctor Turco Angelo. She coordinates LINHA: Research Group on Drawing and Word at EBA-UFMG. She has published two books dealing with the relationship between image and words. She held numerous solo and group exhibitions in Brazil and abroad. She is currently a Fundación Carolina Scholar to develop her research on Typography and Architecture at the Universidad de Granada in November 2011.


VISUAL EDUCATION THROUGH MNEMONICS AND POETIC CATEGORIES IN THE VISUAL ARTS

This project emerges as the result of a long study on visual education and the art of memory, which I have been developing since my first doctoral studies, when I focused on the poetic and political work of Dante Alighieri, bordering the relations between Rhetoric and Art, passing through the studies of Mnemonics. These studies also led me to create a plastic work in the form of temperas and engravings that migrated to artist’s books.
Currently, I seek to understand the possibility of migrating the poetic categories listed by Harold Bloom in Angustia da Influencia – clinamen, tessera, kenosis, demonization, askesis and apofrades – to the visual arts as a way of understanding, comprehending and overcoming poetic/artistic influence. I also add Mary Carruthers’ studies on the influence of Pauline texts and the relationship between the art of memory and Architecture and its basic metaphors for the constitution of an education of the senses.
However, as a plastic artist, I also seek to migrate my theoretical studies to my production as an artist, because in this way I constitute a universe of images to which I move my understanding of the importance of these studies on the visual education that was so important between the 10th and 14th centuries and the development of its disclosure and preservation mechanisms.
All these paths led me to believe that this project triggered transdisciplinary paths by bringing together studies in Theology, Rhetoric, Visual Arts, Cinema, Theater, Literature and Mnemonics, with the academic and scholastic environment being the place of rehearsal between these relationships. I seek, as a researcher and artist, to combine the myths of origin and the genealogy of these categories of thought with my practice as a university professor working in an art school.
